Home to the largest working Mill Steam Engine in Lancashire

Follow us:

Established in 1982, our aim is to maintain a link to the town’s cotton heritage, by preserving and demonstrating the engine which powered over 1,000 looms in the mill from 1920 until its closure in 1978.

On Steaming Days, you can see the Roberts engine in operation, running at its original speed. In the weaving shed we have three looms, one of which we believe was in use at the mill before it closed. We currently weave with the Cooper and the Pilling looms. The Pilling loom has a Jacquarette and is used to weave our souvenir tea towels, which you can buy in the shop, the Cooper loom produces a plain cloth, very much like the bulk of the production at the mill when it was in operation. Also on display is a large collection of artefacts from the weaving industry which brought so much employment to the region.

We have the original Lancashire boiler which powered the engine, driving all the looms and other machinery in the mill. There is a smaller Cornish boiler, which we now use on Steaming Days.

In a separate building we have a Smith and Eastwood engine, known as the Bradley Engine, which ran Peter Green’s Mill in Bradley until 1978. The engine was moved to our site in pieces early this century and was rebuilt by the volunteers, It ran again for the first time on site in 2017.

  • On Saturdays from April to mid-November you can visit 10am to 2pm, though the engines will not be running. You may be asked to wait a short while for a volunteer to be available to take you around as part of a group.
